Where Testaccio Food Tours Meet
The walks gathered here meet all over central Rome, and a good half of them never set foot in Testaccio. Getting this right is the difference between a good morning and twenty minutes of standing in the wrong square. Each of the food tour Rome Testaccio listings names its own point, and they are all below.
The four meeting points inside the rione
Testaccio is small enough that its meeting points are all within about seven hundred metres of each other, and all of them are flat walking from Piramide metro. Learn these four and you can find any Testaccio departure.
Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice
The rione's church square. Guides wait by the war memorial, the Monumento ai Caduti di Testaccio, on the side nearest the church. About 500 m from Piramide.
Piazza Testaccio
Where the market traded in the open until 2012. The meeting point is the fountain in the middle. About 650 m from Piramide.
The Piramide metro exit
The exit facing the pyramid itself, on Piazzale Ostiense. No walk at all if you come by metro.
Via Galvani 4
A residential door two minutes from the market, opposite the old slaughterhouse end of the street. Ring the buzzer for the flat, not the street door.
Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice, and what to look for
The busiest of the four on a weekday morning. Guides stand by the war memorial holding a sign or a coloured tote bag, and there are usually two or three groups forming at once between nine and ten, so read the name on the sign rather than joining the first cluster. A bar on the square does a good coffee if you arrive early, which you should.
Piramide, and the six hundred metres after it
Metro line B puts you on Piazzale Ostiense with the Pyramid of Cestius directly in front of you. The walk in is flat and takes about eight minutes: Via Marmorata north, then left down any of the numbered streets into the grid. There is no station called Testaccio and there never has been, so if a booking confirmation tells you to take the metro to Testaccio, it means this one.
The fountain in Piazza Testaccio
An easy square to find and an easy one to mill about in. The fountain sits in the centre and the guide will be beside it; two different walks use it, so again, read the sign. One operator warns that the point may move depending on the time of the booking and that it will email you if it does, which is worth checking the evening before.
Via Galvani 4, and the buzzer
The cooking class meets at a flat rather than in a square: Via Galvani 4, Edificio C, buzzer eleven. Ring it and you will be let in. It is two minutes' walk from the market's Via Galvani side, which makes it easy to combine with a morning at the stalls if you take an afternoon class.
The walks that start outside the rione and come in
One market morning meets at Piazza Flavio Biondo, outside Roma Trastevere station, and walks across Ponte Testaccio into the quarter — which is how the rione was always approached from the south-west, and a better introduction than arriving by metro. Another meets at the old gate of the Museo della Via Ostiense on Via Raffaele Persichetti, beside the pyramid, and works north through the cemetery and the mound to the market.
Neither is inconvenient. Both simply need you to look at the address rather than assuming Testaccio.
Where the walks across the river meet
The Trastevere and Ghetto walks use seven more points, and none of them is in Testaccio: Piazza Mastai, Piazza Farnese, Piazza del Biscione, Piazza San Simeone, Piazza Benedetto Cairoli, Via di Ponte Quattro Capi outside Trattoria Sora Lella, and the obelisk in front of San Bartolomeo on Tiber Island. Two more meet by Piazza Navona and at Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere.
All of them are between fifteen and thirty minutes on foot from Testaccio, or a short ride on tram 3. If you are staying in the rione and book an evening walk across the river, allow for that rather than discovering it at six o'clock.
Hotel pick-up, and who offers it
The private golf-cart tours collect you from your hotel, and both state it plainly. One more offers a hotel meet-up on request for central addresses, which is an arrangement rather than a promise and needs confirming with the host after booking. Everything else asks you to come to a point.
How early to be there
Fifteen minutes for a walk in Testaccio, twenty for one across the river, where the squares are busier and the lanes confuse phone maps. Guides do not wait: a shared departure that is already ten people cannot hold for one, and most listings say so. Arriving early also buys you the coffee that makes the first hour better.
Every listing, and where it meets you
Most of the walks below stay inside Testaccio, the cart tours combine it with a drive round the centre, and the rest are across the river. The rione column is the one to read first.
